Todays blog post is short and sweet and it’s just about voting in the UK and why it is important as young people to participate in general and local elections. I will be giving 3 of my reasons why I think it’s crucial for young people to vote.
You have a say on important issues that will affect you in the future - people I've spoken to in general do not feel the need to vote because they believe "it doesn't matter," "it doesn't affect me," or "they don't listen to us," but it does affect you, your future, and the generation after us. Politicians, MPs, and ministers will have a retirement age, just like the rest of us, and as the next generation eager to make an influence and change in our society, voting will make it happen. Additionally, and slightly off topic, young people in the UK have had the lowest percentage of votes in a long time; it's critical that we vote so that they can take our issues seriously.
This ties in nicely with the first point: We are the next generation, we build our future - when all these politicians retire, it will be up to us and the people in our generation to build this country; you do not want to live in a hopeless society as a direct result of allowing politicians who do not understand young people's and working-class struggles to vote for you and leave you to pick up the pieces.
Young voters are an incredibly diverse group - Increasing voting diversity is important because it allows young people to express their ideas and what they want to see improved. Voters from a variety of backgrounds will frequently share similar struggles and experiences, allowing MPs to understand this and find ways in the political system to change things so that young people have the upper hand and do not feel as if their opinions on issues are ignored.
Thank you for reading and let me know in the comments below what you think and what you would add to reasons why young people should vote.
